Preparing For Your Evaluation

What to Expect

BNS is committed to providing a comfortable and welcoming space that is energized by our dedication to provide the highest quality of care that incorporates the latest clinical developments.

Possible Evaluation Components:

  • Parent/Caregiver Interview

Dr. Hutchison will meet with parents/caregivers to obtain a detailed history of their child’s development and to understand the family’s goal for the evaluation. This is an opportunity for information to be shared with Dr. Hutchison, to have questions answered, and to begin the collaborative evaluation process.

  • School Visit
In some cases, it can be immensely helpful for Dr. Hutchison to visit a child’s classroom to observe a child in their natural social and academic environment. These visits typically last 1-1.5 hours to provide an opportunity to see a variety of expectations in your child’s school day.
  • Collateral Reports
Parent and teacher input is an important component of the evaluation process. BNS has an extensive library of standardized questionnaires and the most appropriate forms will be used to gather perspectives and insights as well as statistically-supported ratings from the adults in your child’s life.
  • In-Office Evaluation

Your child’s in-person evaluation will span 1-2 days depending on their age and the scope of the evaluation. Our office provides testing environments that are designed with different ages in mind to ensure your child’s comfort. The evaluation will utilize the most current standardized assessment tools, which are meant to be engaging for each stage of development. We will work at your child’s pace and breaks will be offered as needed. During the evaluation, parents are welcome to stay and enjoy the family lounge and café areas – both are features within our office that are available for your comfort.

  • Feedback Session

Once the full evaluation is completed, Dr. Hutchison will thoroughly review and integrate all of the information gathered to provide a comprehensive understanding of your child’s strengths and opportunities for growth. Parents will meet with Dr. Hutchison to review and discuss all of the findings and recommendations. For adolescents, a shorter visit can be scheduled for a brief review to answer any additional questions and promote the development of self-advocacy.
